First Impression
When I arrived on the campus of Southern School of Energy and Sustainability I was extremely nervous. I immediately notice the size of the campus. The grounds of the school appeared to be the size of a community college. There were several fields for athletics, enormous amount of space for parking and surrounded by a booming neighborhood. The grounds seem to be fairly kept and campus grounds were clean. Following my drive around the campus in my car I parked and walked up to the front door of the school. When I entered into the building I was greeted with a smile from the administrative assistant. She asked could she help me or answer any questions. I introduced myself and explained my position she immediately express her eagerness to work with me and began to boast about the highlights of the school expressing the importance of relationships. While talking to her the magnet coordinator Ms. Peaks came up front greeted me and escorted me to the back offices. We continue conversations of our backgrounds and importance of positive relationships with children.
Following that I was able to enter Mr. Leathers office and have a discussion. He greeted me a smile and handshake and ask about me on a personal level which lowered some of my existing anxiety. He went into a crucial conversation of the “Spartan Experience” he is hoping to convey to staff, students and community this year. After that we went on a complete tour of the school covering all the grounds and facilities. He showed me places where students congregate as well as blind spots where behaviors can occur. All during the tour he was depositing words of wisdoms and perspectives to take while leading the school. At the completion of the tour we ended up in the conference room where I met the remainder of the administrative team.
Finally we went around the room introducing ourselves, each one of them gave their perspective on what it takes to be successful at Southern High School each one expressing the need to develop and have intentional, appropriate and positive relationships with the children and staff. Overall my initial impression of the school is a positive one. I was greeted with excellence, each person greeted me with open arms and shared a common idea about the importance of developing relationships.
